TOPIC: Am I who I say I am? Investigating identity fraud from a DIA identity services perspective.

Chris Pellow, Investigator and the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), will present on some of the ways in which persons have attempted and sometimes succeeded in obtaining DIA identity goods and services through dishonest means, and how this has enabled downstream criminal offending. This type of fraud that impacts DIA's work is becoming increasingly organised and complex and comes at a time when people's personal information is becoming more vulnerable to compromise online.

Additionally, Chris will share a case study on Benjamin Cameron which highlights the ways that an individual was able to harvest stolen identities to obtain credit while leaving victims exposed to costs and liability and how DIA was involved with unravelling the extent of his identity theft schemes.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Chris sits within DIA's Regulatory and Identity Services business unit. He has been with the DIA for the past 12 years with the past seven of those years being spent in his current role. Prior to this role, Chris worked as a healthcare regulator in the UK.

DIA is responsible for providing identity services to New Zealanders. This includes New Zealand passports and citizenship, RealMe and the registration of life events such as births, deaths, marriages and name changes.
